THEY-CARE

A place for retirees and the elderly to explore new interests, meet new people, and nurture their skills. The They-care celebrates the joy of living with activities that include gardening, arts and crafts, cooking, and even sports.

The They-care uses a vibrant colour palette to create an energetic and joyful ambience. The goal of the space is to uplift the spirits of the elderly and provide them with the space to continue exploring life and breakaway from their mundane daily routines.

Action Arena

Inspired by the odd antics of the elderly, the Action Arena is a space for them to exercise and enjoy some physical activites.

Sensory Street

Use it or lose it, this is an experiential space to explore and stimulate the different senses.

Cooking Club

Explore and collaborate on new recipes.

Community Garden

A place to express your green fingers. The space also converts into a multi-purpose hall for small events.

Chatter Pods

The one thing aunties & uncles all round the world have in common - gossips & lepak sessions

Sunken Deck

Get a birds-eye view of the Action Arena, while enjoying the natural sunlight from above

Hoarders Colelction

A game area inspired by the hoarding quirks of the elderly. Essentially a physical version of "where's waldo"

Art Atrium

Explore new hobbies and unleash your creative side at the Art Atrium.

Recharge Cradle & Library

At the quiet wing of the building, the recharge cradle allows the elderly to take a midday break, while the library offers a comfortable area to gain knowledge

THE INSPIRATION

people - places - things

With our final year's site being in Penang, I was instantly drawn towards the memories of my grandparents who lived there. I began by mapping out their daily routines and memories I had with them there.

For my first assignment, my narrative comprises of all these memories, laid out in the floor plan of my grandparents' house according to where they happened.

With memories being intangible and personal, I had to find a way to represent them in a way that anyone could relate to. I then decided to focus on the quirks & personalities of my grandparents and older relatives.

We all know these quirks when we see them -

that one aunty who loves and fully utilises a good sale,

or that one uncle who insists to keep the plastic wrapping on his car's visor
